Plants, Genes & Crop Biotechnology

... the most popular university lecturer source ...

2nd edition, by Maarten Chrispeels and David Sadava

550 pages full color textbook for 1st and 2nd year university students from Jones & Bartlett Publishers, in collaboration with Education Foundation of the American Society of Plant Biologists.

The authors, with help from Marc van Montagu (chairman Plant Biology Institute for Developing Countries) are seeking sponsors to distribute this book on a wide scale to lecturers in developing countries.

You can make a personal sponsor donation ( 100$, see below ), or companies could sponsor $5,000 - $ 10,000 to select a specific country for distribution. (download Word document for corporate sponsors)

Why distribution to university lecturers and researchers in the developing world?

There is a clear need for up to date textbooks in developing countries and the need in plant genetics is very acute. Some vocal NGOs that oppose GM technology have been very active and effective in developing countries. The people do not have access to alternate source of information. By targeting instructors in universities and giving them an up to date textbook, there is a good chance that they will weave this information into their classes. The instructors at the best universities are of course aware of everything that is going on (although they may lack the detailed information provided by a textbook), but instructors at second tier institutions of higher learning may be less certain. They are certainly less wired into the information networks. Thus this is a long term education project in which we hope to educate the educators. We wish to send these books to lecturers rather than to libraries because we believe that there is a greater chance that the books will actually be read and used.
